ACTION PLAN

I think this plan is a fantastic idea.

Not only will it allow adults to have a sport suited for their needs (size), it will bring more business to the community as we start to host tournaments and create more leagues.

It's hard to gain access to the base, with many rules and regulations to abide by. If we have a park located in the city, more civilians will be encouraged to use the fields- thus yielding a greater profit for maintenance and improvements over the years.

I will do what I can to help this project take shape, and I look forward to it succeeding!

Ballpark Complex: It's a great plan.

Spot-on Jessica! I totally agree.

In regards to the social and health benefits, this plan can definitely benefit our community and abroad. For many it's a great way to take a break from the indoor gym and enjoy what is out there. And for others it's all about the fun: a great time with family and friends. It's good to have a sport activity for adults to participate in rather than just standing or sitting on the sidelines. Let the adults become heros to their kids for a change. Bring back one of our greatest pastimes in our community!

I totally support this effort 100%. I too, would do what I can to help. [So long as I don't have to pay anymore taxes. :)]

I am excited to see that folks are at least thinking of improving and expanding our usage of the great outdoors. Our children are able to compete against other towns/cities through soccer, football, baseball; it would be great if the adults could too. I love the Ft. Nugent play fields. It is a great example of how our community can come together and sistered with our military friends create a wonderful place for families to live, learn, and love! I use the Flinestone Drive trail nearly everyday and would love to see it reach more ground along such a scenic area! The softball fields on base are awesome, but if you are not military can be cumbersome to access at times. Something to add to the idea/thought process...perhaps an indoor stadium of some sort would be great too! The kids could play soccer year round. The city could start a volleyball league that could host other towns/cities in tournaments. The possibilities are endless and I would support a fee or temporary tax to get started!

This plan is a great idea!!!

As an avid softball player, having an adult sized complex would be fantastic.

Playing in many other complexes, I've seen the potential and the realization of income the city can bring in.

I am more than willing to give my time and effort to make this happen!!!

Some decent "adult" sized softball fields are way overdue for our community. I have been part of the Naval Base leauge for 9 years, and this year we actually had to turn teams away due to field usage limitations. This speaks volumes about the amount of people interested in playing softball. This project "WOULD" become a great source of revenue for the City by hosting tournaments. I know teams that would come from other cities (I have personally spoke to many players in the Mount Vernon area that say they wish there were tournaments in Oak Harbor). Tournaments could be created for charities as well to help our community.

I have built many great friendships from my involvement in softball, and having fields off base would expand the possibilties.

I am asking everyone that has a love for this sport to please do what you can to make your voice heard - let's make this happen.

I think that the "Action Plan" goal refering to the adult softball complex would be, by far, the best addition that the city could make. Why are we so focused on expanding jogging/hiking routes and nature walks in this city? The beachfront in Oak Harbor isn't even that nice, not compared to some of the beachfront in other parts of Whidbey Island. Besides, how does connecting a jogging path all the way from Scenic Heights to Maylor Point bring revenue to the city? Exactly. It doesn't. An adult softball complex that is capable of supporting tournament play, brings teams from as far as Eastern Washington and even other states such as Oregon and Idaho. Those teams stay in Oak Harbor hotels and eat in Oak Harbor resturaunts. Not to mention the tens of thousands of dollars that the Parks Department would gain through league and team fees alone during the tournament season. Just look at the Skagit County softball complex. Two tournaments a month, six months a year, 20-30 teams in a tournament, three to four hundred dollars per team. Talk about a boost to the Parks Department revenue, and a boost to the local economy. Then, in the fall, start a kickball league on the same fields. Skagit County does, and its successful. If the joggers/hikers feel left out surround the entire softball complex with a jogging trail. Everyone wins.

This plan is a winning situation for all parties involved. Not only for the softball community, but for the town as well. This is also a great idea because it is a "low impact" development with added "green" instead of more buildings and black top. The bottom line is that this is a long overdue idea that would be great for everyone involved and a healthy community developer.

Let's make it happen.

The base has been a wonderful partner in the years Ive played softball but to have a park in the city of Oak Harbor would only enhance our partnership. This can only bring our community closer and have families become more involved. Excellent idea!
